The South of France has two distinct wind engines that make it one of Europe's most consistent kite destinations. The Tramontane is a cold, dry northwest wind that funnels between the Pyrenees and the Massif Central, blasting the Languedoc coast around Leucate and Gruissan with steady 20 to 35 knot gusts. The Mistral is a north to northwest wind that accelerates down the Rhone Valley and hits the Var coast around Hyères and the Almanarre lagoon. Both winds can blow for days at a time, often triggered by the same low-pressure system passing north of France. Summer thermal effects add afternoon sea breezes on lighter days. Winter sees the strongest Tramontane events but water temps drop below 15 °C.
The flagship spot on the Languedoc coast. A long sandy beach fully exposed to the Tramontane with side-offshore wind. When it blows, it blows hard: 25 to 35 knots is normal. Flat water in the Leucate lagoon on the inland side, waves on the sea side. The town lives and breathes kitesurfing.
About 30 minutes north of Leucate. Shallow lagoon with flat water and sandy bottom, ideal for beginners and freestyle. The Tramontane hits here too but the lagoon provides a more sheltered environment than the open sea at Leucate.

The Tramontane and Mistral regularly exceed 25 knots, so most riders carry 7 to 9 m² kites as their primary size and a 10 to 12 m² for lighter days. Water temperature ranges from about 14 °C in winter to 24 °C in summer. A 4/3 fullsuit is standard from October through May. In peak summer a 3/2 or shorty works. Booties are useful at rockier spots around Hyères.
Both the Tramontane and Mistral can gust well above 30 knots and catch riders off guard if they rig too big. The Tramontane at Leucate blows side-offshore on the sea side, which means getting blown out is a real risk for beginners. Stick to the lagoon in strong wind. Jellyfish appear in late summer. Some spots around Hyères have rocky entries.
Wind forecasts here are unusually reliable because the Tramontane and Mistral are synoptic (large-scale) winds, not thermal sea breezes. If the forecast says 25 knots, trust it. Leucate has a dedicated kite zone on the beach and a strong community of riders and schools. Hyères is more spread out, but L'Almanarre has parking right on the spot. The TGV runs from Paris to Montpellier or Toulon, so you can be on the water same-day from anywhere in France.
