Broome's wind pattern follows the classic Australian dry-season cycle. From April through October, the southeast trade winds dominate, blowing steadily at 15 to 25 knots most days. The wind fills in by mid-morning and holds through the afternoon. July through September is the peak, with multi-day runs of 20+ knots and barely a cloud in the sky. The wet season (November through March) brings light and variable winds, high humidity, tropical storms, and crocodile activity in the waterways. Cable Beach's 22 km of uninterrupted sand faces the Indian Ocean to the west, so the southeast trades hit cross-offshore, producing flat to slightly choppy conditions.

You can drive on the beach (4WD) and set up anywhere. The sheer space means you will never feel crowded. The sunsets here are legendary.
The southern end near the red cliffs of Gantheaume Point. More exposed to swell wrapping around the point, so there is small wave riding on bigger days. Rockier entry near the point itself. Go at low tide for the dinosaur footprints in the reef.
On the eastern side of the Broome peninsula. Sheltered from ocean swell, with huge tidal flats that create a massive flat-water playground at mid-tide. The mud flats are exposed at low tide, so timing is everything. Onshore wind on southeast days.
The dry-season trades are strong and steady, so 9 to 11 m² kites are the workhorse sizes. Bring a 7 m² for the windiest days. Water temperature stays between 24 and 28 °C year-round, so boardshorts and a rashguard are all you need. Sun protection is critical: Broome sits at 18° South and the UV is intense. Reef shoes are useful near Gantheaume Point and on Roebuck Bay's tidal flats.
Saltwater crocodiles are present in the waterways and occasionally on the beach, particularly during the wet season (November to March). In the dry season the risk is lower but not zero. Stay aware and follow local advice. Broome has some of the largest tides in Australia (up to 10 meters), which create strong currents and rapidly changing water depth. The tidal flats at Roebuck Bay can strand you if you misjudge the tide. Box jellyfish (Irukandji) are present from October through May. Stonefish can be in shallow water near rocky areas.
Cable Beach is so long that you can drive a 4WD north of the rocks and have kilometers of beach to yourself. The wind is most reliable from mid-morning through late afternoon. Broome is remote: the nearest major city (Perth) is 2,200 km south, so bring spare gear. There are a few kite shops in town but selection is limited. The dry season (April to October) is the only practical time to visit for kitesurfing. Roebuck Bay at mid-tide is a hidden gem for flat-water sessions.
